Photographs courtesy of Roy B. Clarkson This month we feature an album of yesteryear's photographs of the lumbering town of Cass in Pocahontas County. In 1962, the state purchased 12 miles of track with a 60-foot right-of-way from Cass to Bald Knob, three Shay locomotives, and various other railroad equipment. This was the start of Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Over the years, the state has accrued most of the town and additional railroad stock, making the park a living history for visitors to study and learn about the early lumbering industry in the state. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() To learn more about the logging railroads, read West Virginia Logging Railroads, available from our bookshelf on page 30.
