The New River Drys

By Arnout Hyde Jr.

The Hawks Nest tunnel on the New River is diverted under Gauley Mountain through a 3.2 mile long tunnel. This leaves this part of the New River with a relatively dry river bed which the name Dry is derived. However, a minimum amount of water is always released from the dam to sustain waters for a fish population.
